Multi-biomarker Detection Strategy for Neurodegeneration

 

Due to their complex natures, neurodegenerative disorders like Alzehimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) pose significant challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for timely treatment and effective monitoring of disease progression. Biomarker analysis has become an essential tool to provide measurable indicators of disease onset, disease stage and progression, and response to treatment.

Several key biomarkers are linked to neurodegenerative diseases, including Neurofilament light chain (NF-Light), Amlyoid-beta (Ab) peptides, Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), tau protein, Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase (UCH-L1), Phosphorylated tau 217 (pTau2217), Alpha-synuclein, and ApoE4. Each of these proteins reflects a different aspect of neurodegeneration, such as axonal damage, protein misfolding, or inflammation.

 

With advancements in detection technologies such as Quanterix SIMOA®, Meso Scale Discovery (MSD), and MilliporeSigma SMCxPro®, and Luminex xMAP®, it is now possible to measure key biomarkers simultaneously and with high sensitivity and accuracy. These tools offer significant potential for improving the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases, paving the way for effective care.
